These spiral staircases were common in Ireland's castles...one reason why:

Castles were little more that fortified houses, built to protect the inhabitants from attacks (which apparently were very frequent). Spiral stairs were built clockwise as you ascend because it made it easier for a right-handed defender (above) to wield a sword against the right-handed attacker (below). I suspect left-handed swordsmen were very valuable once you gained access to a castle's keep.
