The legend of the Sleeping Giant: |
In old times, a giant came upon the Dingle Peninsula. A witch among the frightened people managed to put a sleeping spell on him, and he lay on his back in the bay for ages. During that time, the grass grew over his body and the people would often visit him and climb on the green hills that covered him. But the spell finally wore off, and the giant awoke again. As he made his way toward land, the people fled in panic. This upset the giant for he meant them no harm. He finally found a local who would speak to him and asked why people ran in fear. This man explained that his size was the cause for fear and that when he was still in the bay, people came from all around to be near him. Upon learning this, the giant commanded the man to have a sleeping potion prepared for him that would cause him to sleep forever. The man obliged, and the giant, upon taking the potion, walked out to the bay to rest in the very spot you can see him now (notice his head at the right side of the island)
